The children and young people in Nelson have emotional and social needs which could not be fully met within mainstream settings. They have negative experiences of school which have impacted on their social & emotional wellbeing, confidence and ability to access learning and relationships.
These children may have been bullied, misunderstood, have high anxiety levels, sensory processing and communication difficulties and require a very nurturing, compassionate and empathic approach.
Nelson pupils may require therapeutic interventions for anxiety, attachment and developmental trauma-related difficulties and have access to Play Therapy, Occupational Therapy, Cognitive Behavioural Therapy and Compassion Focused Therapy. Pupils also have access to both individual and group Speech & Language Therapy.
Classes in Nelson are no more than 8 pupils with one teacher and one teaching assistant in each
Nelson and Lionheart pupils have classroom learning separately but enjoy play time, school trips and activities together such as Art, Drama, Music, Yoga, Food Tech, Outdoor Learning and Sport.
