Dandelions and Orchids

I came across this quote the other day when attending a conference on Teenage Mental Health organised by Adoption UK.  Dr Matt Woolgar – Consultant Clinical Psychologist at the National Adoption & Fostering Service South London & Maudsley NHS Trust used it in his presentation and I thought it was a very fitting analogy for our children:

“Dandelions and Orchids”

  • Dandelions do OK in most environments
  • Orchids do badly in poor but also in good but not quite right environments
  • Orchids will flourish in exactly right, tailored or personalised environments.
(Ellis & Boyce, 2005)

Our wonderful children are beautiful Orchids!
